Not so much a retcon as inattention to detail: Westphall says he is 18 years older than Novino. In the previous episode, Lizzy says Novino is 35. This would make Westphall 53. However, in "Slice of Life" (4.05), Westphall's age is given as 55. "Time Heals, Pt. 2" establishes that Westphall was six in 1935, which would make him 56 or 57 at this point in 1986.
