R.I.P. Norman Lloyd, St. Elsewhere's Dr. Daniel Auschlander

The St. Elsewhere Experience is pleased to honour the memory and life of Hollywood legend Norman Lloyd, who played Chief of Services Dr. Daniel Auschlander on all six seasons of St. Elsewhere, and who passed away at the tender age of 106 years on May 11, 2021.

Here's the obit from The Hollywood Reporter:

Personally, I will miss wishing him birthday greetings every November 8th. Quite impressive for the actor whose elderly character passed away from a stroke in the series finale 33 years ago, having survived the longest cancer remission in TV history.

  2. I'm rewatching the series (and introducing it to my daughter, who has been delighted to recognize various actors she only knew from their much-later work), and was struck by a comment in the pilot episode about how Dr. Auschlander was going to outlive them all. He very nearly did. 106 years, that is mind-boggling. My daughter was also amazed - at her young age, a man in his sixties already seems a very old man - when I told her that what she was seeing was from 40 years ago and that the actor had only just passed, she could hardly believe it!

  3. R.I.P Norman Lloyd. Rewatching St Elsewhere with as much enjoyment and warmth as the first time, all those years ago❤️

  4. I'm 66 and a doctor and St. Elsewhere was a powerhouse series! I too am rewatching it on HULU. So many young actors from those early series (Hill Street Blues included!)

  5. I just discovered St. Elsewhere on Hulu. There is nothing dated about it. Happy to enjoy it all over again.
